Ice-cream Flavour Creator
Grace, Beverly Hills Girls High
There lived a young lass
A sweet tooth she had,
For ice-cream was the treat that made her most glad.
On her way home from school,
The five days of the week.
She would stop by the shop and take a quick peek.
She had her favourites,
No doubt,
But day after day: no new flavours came out!
So she’d stick to the same ol’,
“Cookies and Cream”
Until one day she took it to the ultimate extreme.
She ran the way home,
At quite a fast pace.
As her brand new idea put a smile on her face.
She made a list,
Of the treats she adored.
Crème Brule, cheesecake and topping that’s poured.
With the list completed,
And ideas in her mind,
She combined ice-cream with desserts of all kinds.
Into the blender,
Then the freezer to set,
Were creations with qualities yet to be met.
Mango Pudding,
Sweet Potato Pie,
She had made all sorts of flavours to try.
This little lass
Went on to befall,
The greatest flavour maker of all.
An entrepreneur,
At such a young age,
She studied for years and mastered her trade.
She then went on,
To work in a lab,
Mixing flavours together that children would grab.
A few things,
She had to consider,
The rules of the trade were strict and quite bitter.
Do this,
Don’t touch that,
Enclosed shoes and hair tied back.
The union she joined,
She showed was no failure:
The Confectionery Union of Australia.
She started her own business,
And was payed a yearly rate,
With five zeros behind an eight.
This young lass,
Had influenced me,
Her career path I’ll follow: a flavour-maker to be.
So no longer is,
There just “Cookies and Cream”
Because this young lass found the job of her dream.

Chef: My dream job
Daniel, Forest Lake SHS
My dream job would be one that involves cooking. This is because I like experimenting with different recipes and enjoy the challenges of being flexible and having to be exact at the same time.
I really like to cook with my Nanna and one of my favourite recipes I like to cook with her is marinated steak with garlic and rosemary potatoes. The marinate is a mix of soy sauce, hoi sin sauce, honey, garlic and ginger and quartered potatoes spread with garlic and rosemary butter.
Cooking which is a hobby that I really enjoy, thanks to my nanna, is one that I would like to make my job in he future.
I am good at planning and arranging things, work well with other people, am always on time and like cooking, which are some of the tasks preformed by chefs.
Education/Training
To become a chef you usually have to complete an apprenticeship in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery). Entry requirements may vary, with training both on and off the job through Registered Training Organisations, including TAFE.
What might my starting pay be?
The completion of my apprenticeship would see me earn in the range of $600 - $800 per week. As an apprenticeship it would be a percentage of this (starting at about 55%) and increasing each year as sections are completed.
What union or unions will you be able to join?
Liquor Hospitality & Miscellaneous Union (LHMU)
What occupational health and safety precautions I may need to take?
Young workers seem to have more accidents then older workers. This maybe because they do not have the experience, knowledge or skills necessary to protect themselves, or have not been properly trained and do not ask enough questions. It would be important for me to make sure I develop the skills necessary for the workplace, listen to instructions and to ask questions if I am unsure.
I Want To Roll Like Rudd
Felicity, New England Girls High School
When I’m old, grey, wise and wrinkly, I want to be able to tell my grandchildren that I was the first female Prime Minister, because I can’t think of anything cooler that I could do with my life. Politicians get to fly all over the world, bolt around in free cars and live in sprawling houses, without ever having the expectation to be honourable or honest, while getting paid up to $330, 300 a year. Of course, I’d have to start off as a lowly local councillor (where I’d only get paid around $15, 00 a year), before eventually climbing the ladder of governmental success right to the top rung.
I wouldn’t join a union, I’d run them, and if I have any occupational health and safety issues, I can simply change the law so I get away with it or pay some inferior cabinet member to fix it. My life would basically consist of press conferences, photo shoots and kissing babies. However, a university degree in world politics followed with work at an International Agency and some professional development (to assist my political correctness) would help me along the way to my rightful place at The Lodge.
My only worry is whether I’d get elected, but I’ll worry about that when the time comes!
