Ferguson, Martin

Martin Ferguson is the federal member for Batman in Victoria and takes his place in Parliament as the current Minister for Resources & Energy and Minister for Tourism.

Born in Sydney on 12 December 1953, Ferguson completed his high schooling at St Patricks, Strathfield. He then attended Sydney University, graduating with a Bachelor of Economics (Honours).

Prior to being elected President of the ACTU in April 1990, Martin had worked continuously for the Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union of Australia from November 1975. After initially being appointed by the Miscellaneous Workers' Union as a Federal Research Officer, Martin became the union's Assistant General Secretary in October 1981 and General Secretary in June 1984. Martin has been a member of the ALP since December 1968.

As President of the ACTU Martin served on various advisory councils and foundations including the Social Security Review, Economic Planning Advisory Council, the National Labour Consultative Council and the Advance Australia Foundation.
He was elected to Parliament in March 1996. Since being elected, Martin has served as a member of the Labor’s front bench. Following the Australian Labor Party’s win in 2007, Martin has been appointed to Cabinet as Minister for Resources and Energy and Minister for Tourism.
