Crean, Simon

Simon Crean is the Minister for Trade in the Rudd Government. He was born in Melbourne in 1949 and educated at Melbourne High School and Monash University, obtaining degrees in Economics and Law.
Prior to entering Parliament, Simon was President of the ACTU. He was elected to the position in 1985, having held the honorary positions of ACTU Junior Vice-President (1981-83) and ACTU Senior Vice-President (1983-85). Simon has been actively involved with various national and international organisations since starting out with the Federated Storemen and Packers' Union of Australia in 1976.
Until his election to Parliament he was a member of the governing body of the International Labor Organisation, the Economic Planning and Advisory Council, the Rural and Allied Industries Council, the board of Qantas, the Board of the AIDC and the Transport Industry Advisory Council.
After being elected to Federal Parliament in March 1990, Simon was appointed Minister for Science and Technology. He was also Minister Assisting the Treasurer with specific responsibility for prices and the Prices Surveillance Authority, the Foreign Investment Review Board and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
From June 1991 until December 1993, Simon was Minister for Primary Industries and Energy. The portfolio encompassed agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries, minerals and energy. From there he went on to become Minister for Employment, Education and Training, a portfolio which he held up until Labor lost the 1996 federal election.
In 2007, Simon became Minister for Trade in the Rudd government.
