WSI #1 - Avoiding the pay day rip off

Show me the money!

Lesson number one for all Work Scene Investigators is pay
- how often, how much and what are the extra benefits?
Get out your note books and test your knowledge about
everything related to the money you receive in exchange
for the work you do.

Pay refers to payment received by an employee for work or services. It could be by the week, day, month or by the individual job performed. A salary is usually calculated as the amount an employee earns in an entire year, and is usually paid in fortnightly or monthly amounts.

So what about sick pay, holiday pay and superannuation? Think about your part-time or casual job and answer the following questions. If you don't have a part-time job, find a partner who does and work with them.

a) How much do you get paid an hour?
b) How often do you get paid?
c) Are you entitled to holiday or sick pay? How much?
d) Do you think your pay is fair? Why / why not?
e) Does your pay vary depending on day of the week or time of the day?

Swap your answers with someone else and compare.

Super stuff!

Superannuation is a way of saving money to support yourself after you have retired from work. All full time, part time and casual workers earning more than $450 per month are legally entitled to receive superannuation contributions from their employer. Your employer’s compulsory superannuation contributions must be equivalent to at least 9% of your earnings.

Do you belong to a superannuation fund?

If you have a part-time job or did holiday work and earned more than $450 in one month, you probably have money in a superannuation fund.

If you know the name of the fund, visit their website and find out the following information:

a) What industries do they cover?
b) How many members do they have?
c) How much money do they manage?
d) Are they an ‘industry fund’ or a retail fund?

Here are links to superannuation funds that have a lot of young members (because they cover industries like retail and hospitality).
