WHAT IS - Organising works
29 May 2009
Are you looking for a job that gives you the chance to make a difference in other people’s lives? If the answer is ‘yes,’ then a union career might be for you.
Organising works is a traineeship program delivered by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU.) The program aims to recruit people into unions and give them the skills and knowledge to become effective organisers.
The ACTU and other unions set up Organising Works to boost union membership. Twenty years ago, half the Australian workforce belonged to a union. Now however, less than one in three Australian workers is a union member.
Trainees are employed by a participating union. They will gain on the job experience working with that union, and exposure to the skills, strategies and knowledge required to work effectively as a union organiser.
The trainee’s primary role is to work at a grass roots level recruiting and organising principally in non-union areas. Graduates from Organising Works travel to workplaces to talk about what the union does and issues the union supports.
Organising works is a great way of introducing more women, young people and workers from different ethnic and diverse backgrounds into the union movement.
