WHAT IS - Australian Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship offers a different experience of education to that of University or TAFE. When you undertake an apprenticeship you will receive a combination of education and on the job training in an industry of your choice.
An apprenticeship will give you a nationally recognised qualifications and skills that will provide the basis for further training as your career progresses. Other benefits of an apprenticeship include:
- A great way to get a head start in your chosen field
- A combination of training that can be one the job, off the job or a combination of both
- A pathway from school to work, or a fresh start if you are re-entering the workforce or wanting to take a different direction
- ‘Competency based’ which means that you complete the training sooner if you reach the desired skill level
Apprenticeships are available in around 500 different industries including:
- Agriculture, horticulture and related industries
- Automotive
- Building and construction
- Food
- Hairdressing
- Public services
- Metals and engineering
- Information technology
- Community services and health
- Tourism
- Utilities
Depending on the industry, your apprenticeship will run for between one and four years.

A better deal for apprentices
All apprentices can join a union and some unions are running special campaigns to get a better deal for trainees.
The
AMWU has a special website for apprentices. It’s all a part of their push to get a better deal for apprentices, including:
- Lower TAFE fees
- Improved Tool Allowances
- Higher wages for apprentices
- Better quality of training, and
- Improved job security.
