How to apply for a job – tips for job seekers

21 May 2010

Here are some tips for job seekers. Start by looking for a job, then making an application, going to an interview and following up if you are accepted or declined

Where to look for a job?

Newspapers: Most newspapers have advertisements for ‘situations vacant’. In daily newspapers there are normally more job adverts in Saturday editions. Local newspapers will also have job ads. (Watch out for scams including phony jobs for modeling or door-to-door sales. If a business advertises every week, unless it’s a very big business, it is probably dodgy!)

Online job portals: There a number of successful services that offer job vacancies on the internet, including the government’s service Jobsearch.gov.au

Employment agencies: In some industries with specialist skills, like hospitality and nursing, there are agencies that place employees with employers.

Friends, family and community: Many people find jobs through people they know. Let people know you are looking for a job; it will work better if you can say what kind of work you are seeking. For example, let the coach of the footy team know you are looking for a job, this lets him/her say that they know someone looking to hire a trainee.

Do your homework

Do some research about the job you are applying for and know about the employer. Speak to others who either work there or know the company.  Look on the internet at their website – they may have specific information for applicants. If you are interested in the position and their business they will be interested in you.

Be clear, concise and consistent and then check again!

Read carefully the job criteria and make sure you understand the job you are applying for. Address everything the employer is asking. It is easy to misread and forget parts of the application.

TIPS
Type your application.
Don’t go over the word limit.
Get someone else to read it and correct any errors.
Make sure things like the font are consistent.
Don’t have a doozy of an email address.
Record a sensible voice message on your phone.
Be truthful.
Don’t forget to attach your resume’ when applying online.

How to prepare for an interview

Most people say that job interviews are stressful – that’s normal. But you don’t need to let the stress get the better of you.
Get some questions ready.
Do a mock interview at home.
Make sure you know how to get there.
Arrive early.
Dress appropriately and look neat.

What to do in the interview

In an interview the employer wants to find out if you can do the job and if you will fit in at their workplace.
Ask questions!! This makes it easier for everyone. There is no need to skirt around issues like pay, working hours and training. These are realistic questions to ask in an interview. Your interviewer will not be embarrassed when you ask, even if you are.

Other tips
Don’t butt in.
Be interested and give detailed answers.
Have open body language.
Speak clearly.

Accepted?

If you are accepted and get the job, well done!
Make sure you come prepared on your first day. Bring details of any super funds, your tax file number and your bank account details.
If you are unsuccessful, call and ask for feedback. They will provide you with some helpful information that will help you continue your job search.
