Under this award there is a starting salary of $599.10 per week for graduates. The CPA bases its salary figures on surveys conducted by Accountancy Placements. They estimate the average starting salary for a graduate in Melbourne with no experience to be $563.70.

Actor/Performer

How you get there: University, TAFE, On-the-job training

Job Description: Actors portray roles in dramatic productions for theatre, film, radio, television and other audiences.

Example Starting wage: A typical award covering actors is the Actors (Theatrical) (State) Award Actors are covered by a variety of awards depending on the type of work, broadcasting rights and so on. If you find work as an actor, you should contact the MEAA before you commence. There is a minimum adult wage of $621.80 per week (Grade 1) increasing to $663.50 per week (Grade 2) for a 40 hour week with a maximum of eight performances.

Air Traffic Controller

How you get there: TAFE, onsite training.

Job Description: Air Traffic Controllers control aircraft operations within designated airspace and aerodromes by directing aircraft movements, providing operational control and aeronautical information services and by coordinating search and rescue assistance.

Example Starting wage: Air Traffic Controllers are covered by the Airservices Australia Award 2000. Air Traffic Controllers are paid between $36,061 and $49,654 per annum, with a controller in training starting on $27,973 per annum. However, their wages are now set under an enterprise agreement, and vary according to the airport at which they work. Air traffic controllers in-training are paid $27,973 at college.

Animal Attendant

How you get there: On the job training, TAFE

Job Description: Animal attendants feed, water and care for animals and birds in restricted environments such as kennels, pet shops, circuses, natural parks, animal shelters and larger veterinary clinics and hospitals.

How you get there: Apprenticeship 

Job Description: Bricklayers lay bricks, pre-cut stone, concrete blocks and other types of building blocks in mortar to construct and repair veneer and solid walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures.

Example Starting wage: A Bricklayer’s role fits under the National Building and Construction Industry Award 2000 [Transitional] and is classified as a Construction Worker Level 3 (CW3) and has an hourly rate (specific to bricklayer/ tilelayer) of $18.66 and fits within a class weekly rate of $637.70 As private contractors, market rates apply according to the demand of the day. An example of this is as private contractors bricklayers can charge per brick according to current market demand. There are a large range of special allowances operating in the building industry including allowances for fares and extra money for types of jobs and conditions.

Builder's Labourer

Butcher

How you get there: Apprenticeship

Job Description: Butchers organise, select, cut, trim and prepare meat and offal for sale or supply using knives, hand tools and power equipment.

Example Starting wage: There are 3 Federal Awards for butchers, depending on which sector of the industry you are working. They are: the Federal Meat Industry (Retail and Wholesale) Award 2000; Federal Meat Industry (Process) Award 2000 and the Federal Meat Industry (Smallgoods) Award 2000. A Level 1 general butcher with no experience can expect to earn $484.40 per week. A general butcher at Level 7 can expect to earn $602.80 per week. As an apprentice, you would earn 50% of the trade’s person’s wage per week in the first year and 95% per week in the fourth year. Wages paid in supermarkets are higher.

Camera Operator (Film and Television)

How you get there: University, On-the-job training, TAFE

Job Description: Film and Television Camera Operators set up and operate equipment, in studios or outdoors, to photograph people, events and scenes.

Example Starting wage: There is a range of awards for camera operators, and the award will depend on which part of the industry an employee is working. A Television Camera Operator in Victoria is covered by the Television Industry Award 2000. Under the award, a camera operator in training will be on a minimum salary of $544.50 per week. The highest rate for an experienced camera operator under the award is $701.40 per week. Rates of pay under enterprise agreements will be higher.

Carpenter/Joiner

How you get there: Apprenticeship

Job Description: Carpenters and joiners construct, erect, install, finish and repair timber structures and fixtures used in internal and external buildings and constructions projects.

Example Starting wage: A carpenter and joiner may be covered by the National Building and Construction Industry Award (N0122). Qualified Carpenters and joiners enter as CW3 tradesmen. The starting salary is $ 578.30 per week plus tool allowance. The pattern rate, ie the rate that applies across the construction industry, for EBAs is 30% - 35% higher than the initial rate. As private contractors market rates apply, according to the demand of the day. An example of this is, as private contractors, carpenters can charge per plank according to current market demand. There are a large range of special allowances operating in the building industry including allowances for fares and extra money for types of jobs and conditions like confined spaces and hot, wet, dirty and high work. The minimum ordinary rate of pay to be paid to apprentices shall be in accordance with the percentages as set out below (calculated to the nearest ten cents, less than five cents to be disregarded) applied to the aggregate of the appropriate tradespersons minimum weekly rate. A first year apprentice will receive 45% of the weekly rate of the appropriate tradesperson, and 95% of the weekly rate in their fourth year.

How you get there: On-the-Job training

Job Description: Cashiers receive cash, cheques or credit card payments, record these payments using cash registers or electronic equipment, and provide change to customers.

Example Starting wage: Checkout operators in shops in Victoria are employed under the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (Victorian Shops) Interim Award 2000. The weekly wage for a Level 1 employee is $543.40 for a 38 hour week (no penalties). Sixteen year olds earn 50% of this wage, rising in steps to 90% at the age of 20. A person in management can earn up to $595.90 per week. Checkout operators can be paid more if employed under an enterprise agreement, including proportionate increases for junior workers.

Example Starting wage: A data processor could be employed under an award similar to the Clerical and Administrative Employees (Victoria) Award 1999. Job Description: Delivery drivers drive motorcycles, cars or small vans to deliver goods and materials or to act as messengers or couriers. Some couriers also deliver messages on foot or by bicycle.

Example Starting wage: Couriers can be covered by the Transport Industry (State) Award. Under the Award couriers' rates vary from Levels 1 to 10, depending greatly on the size of the delivery vehicle. Level 1 - foot or bicycle couriers earn $626.50 per week. Level 2 - motorcycle or vehicle not exceeding 4.5 tons earn $644.30 per week, through to; Level 8 - Larger vehicle, earn $766.50 plus allowances payable for larger loads.

How you get there: University

Job Description: Dieticians plan and supervise diets and provide advice and information on food, nutrition and health.

Example Starting wage: Dietician’s wages are affected by where they work (public sector, private sector, specialist institute) and the environments they work in (specific hospitals and country or metropolitan). Wages vary and are likely to be set under an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement for example, a dietician employed by the International Diabetes Institute would be covered by the International Diabetes Institute would be covered by the International Diabetes Institute (Dieticians) Certified Agreement. Under this agreement, weekly wages range from $604.50 to $1559.80, depending on the Dieticians grading and experience level.

How you get there: University

Job Description: Doctors/Medical practitioners are involved in health maintenance and investigating, diagnosing and treating illness and injury.

Example Starting wage: Doctors are covered by a number of awards in Australia. For example, Doctors in South Australia are most likely to be employed under the South Australian Medical Officers Award if working in the public sector. After training, the first year of work before registration (or internship), there is a base salary rate of $38,328 per annum, based on a 43 hour week (Registrars' 5 hours training time), with extra payment for overtime. Engineer

How you get there: University

Job Description: Engineers plan, design, organise, and supervise the construction of electrical, civil mechanical and other engineering projects, or oversee the operation and maintenance of mechanical and other equipment.

Example Starting wage: Engineers work in a wide range of areas. Many engineers are covered by the Engineering Award - State 2002. This sets the wages for graduate engineers the top rate payable by this award, the C1 professional engineer/scientist which pays $822.50 per week. However, the market rate for an experienced engineer can be a lot higher and union agreements secure higher rates as well.

Taxi Driver

Job Description: Taxi drivers drive cars to transport passengers. 

Example Starting wage: Taxi drivers are covered by state awards like the Taxi Industry (Contract Drivers) Contract Determination 1984. This sets a minimum pay in of $160.03 per day. This rate varies according to days/time worked. Taxi drivers will be required to submit their pay ins and anything over and above this they keep for themselves. The Transport Workers Union is currently lobbying for greater protection of taxi drivers and the establishment of a base full time award rate of pay. Under the GST Taxi drivers are considered a business and are required to have an ABN.

Job Description: Municipal Technical Officers are responsible for many duties in local government, including roads, building regulations, refuse management, pollution prevention and other local responsibilities.

Example Starting wage: The award you would be employed under varies from state to state. In Tasmania you may be employed under the Municipal Officers (Hobart City Council) Award 2002, unless you work in one of the five cities which have their own awards. Under the above award, a 21 year old would earn $29,283 per annum on commencement at the classification of Level 1. There are junior salary rates which are a percentage of $29283, depending on your age. There are five levels, with the top salary at Level 7 being $64,993 per annum.

Job Description: Zoologists are biologists who study the structures, characteristics, functions, ecology and environments of animals to increase scientific knowledge and develop practical applications in wildlife management, conservation, agriculture and medicine.

Example Starting wage: Zoologists working for the C.S.I.R.O. are employed under the CSIRO Enterprise Agreement 2008 2011.
